The name of this organization shall be the St. George
The St. George Historical Society was founded to collect,
preserve and display items of historic interest concerning the
City of St. George, Kansas and the surrounding area. The Society
will use available resources to gather items and provide a
permanent location for public education and viewing.
Membership in the St. George Historical Society is available
upon receipt of yearly dues in the amount of $25.00 per family.
Lifetime membership is available upon receipt of $500.00 per
family. The donation of item(s) valued at or above $500.00 as
appraised by a licensed insurance appraiser will also qualify the
donor for Lifetime membership. Members will receive newsletters
from the Society and be allowed voting privileges in Society
business. Members may choose to remain anonymous and are not
required to attend meetings. Membership is retained but voting
privileges will be revoked for not attending 3 consecutive or
half of scheduled business meetings in a dues year.
Individuals and businesses may be designated as Sponsors of
the Society upon a donation of at least $150.00. The Society will
provide public recognition of Sponsors by placement of their
names on Society publications, advertising and promotional items
for the year in which the donation is made. Sponsors may choose
to remain anonymous.
Items in this article may be amended by a majority of the
voting members in the Society based on discussion at business
meetings and provided to members at least 60 days prior to a new
Amendments shall become effective immediately following
approval of the majority of voting membership.
Yearly membership shall be from March 1 of the calendar year
to February 28 of the next calendar year.
The officers of the St. George Historical Society shall be a
Board of Directors. All officers shall be active in the affairs
of the Society. Board of Directors will serve their positions
with no monetary compensation.
The Board of Directors shall consist of President, Vice
President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President shall head the
The terms for the Board of Directors shall be 2 years with the
exception of the year 2006 where the Vice President and Secretary
shall serve 1 year terms.
Except as otherwise provided the powers and duties of the
officers of the St. George Historical Society shall be as
indicated by the title of office. All officers are required to be
signatories for payments made by the Society. Other duties and
powers may be delegated to officers upon approval of the majority
of voting members. Officers may be removed for dereliction of
office at the request of the 50% of members and approved by a ¾
majority of voting members.
Vacancies on the Board of Directors shall be filled by
nominations taken from voting members and approved by a majority
The St. George Historical Society shall meet at least monthly
on the first Sunday of each month at 4:00 pm for conducting
regular business of the Society. Location of the regular meetings
shall be the Hideaway Café 207 First Street St. George, until
such time as the Historical Society procures a permanent
location. Additional meetings shall be held as needed.
A majority of members with voting privileges as determined by
the previous business meeting shall constitute a quorum for the
transaction of official business.
Committees may be created by a majority of voting members as
needed to carry out the business of the Society.
ARTICLE VIII-OFFICIAL PUBLICATION
The official publication of the St. George Historical Society
shall be “Looking Forward to Our Past” newsletter.
ARTICLE IX-PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY
The rules contained in “Roberts Rules of Order Revised” shall
govern the proceedings of the Foundation in all cases in which
they are applicable, and where they are not inconsistent with the
By-laws or special rules of order of this Society.
These By-laws may be amended by a ¾ majority of eligible
voting members in the St. George Historical Society provided that
copies of the proposed amendment(s) are published in the “Looking
Forward to Our Past” newsletter and/or posted in the official St.
George Historical Society web site at least 60 days prior to the
date of the vote.
